Alternate Bids and Unit Prices are also to be set forth excluding cost for such insurance. The Owner will select which alternates it desires and will determine the low bidder based upon the bids without insurance being provided by the Contractor.

Good evening ladies and gentlemen.

Members of the marching band, cheerleaders, and football team appeared at several PSSA Pep Rallies around the district. They enjoyed helping the elementary and middle school students prepare for and focus on these tests.

The Junior Prom will be held in the 11/12 building on Saturday, April 27, 2013. The juniors are anxiously anticipating this annual event.
April is a busy month for campus art students. Many of them participated in the Coatesville Area School District Art Show that was held at the Cultural Society on Friday, April 12th. Selected art students will be participating in the 39th Annual Chester County High School Art exhibition on April 27th. The exhibit will be open for viewing from April 27th to May 4th at the Chester County Art Association in West Chester.

Congratulations to the following students who most recently earned awards at the Delaware Valley Science Fair: Freshman Katie Ernst received 1st place in mathematics and was awarded the “Leonardo DaVinci Society Award.” Ian Applebaum, a freshman, earned an Honorable Mention for his project. We would like to recognize Joshua Bream, Hunter Stiebritz and Aimee Hawley who also participated in the Delaware Valley Science Fair. All of these students were winners at the district and county levels and competed against the top projects from the entire Tri-State area. Thank you for proudly representing Coatesville High School.

The Lilies and Pearls Cotillion was held on Saturday, April 20th at the Gateway Center in Parkesburg. The debutantes participated in a series of experiences and activities that emphasized healthy lifestyles, academic achievement and economic independence. Diamond Bailey, Jocelyn Brown Sydney Coppadge, Lake Greene, Ayanna Holmes, Joslyn Jackson, Valarie Jones and Janeyah Rivers-Hamilton are among the young ladies who participated in this gala social event. Their escorts included Anthony Barnett, Tim Hallager, Avery Thompson, Jalen Hudson, Stephen Collins and Nyreek Scott.

We would like to thank the members of the S.A.D.D. (Students Against Destructive Decisions) club and their advisor, Ms. Whitehead, for their recent assembly highlighting the serious consequences of driving while distracted. Activities like using a cell phone and texting while driving were discouraged. Students were encouraged to always wear their seatbelts and abide by all traffic laws.

Students in the Personal Finance class participated in a stock market game online. They immersed themselves in a game that provided them with hands-on experience learning about investment options and how the stock market works. In class the students have made successful investments that total over $260,000 since they began to play.

Finally, congratulations to the members of the CAMPUS B.R.D.G.E.E. Step Team for their first place win in the 12th annual Multicultural and Diversity Awareness Conference held at Kennett High School on April 13th.

This concludes my report for the evening. Thank you for your time.

The Coatesville Area School District’s 10 Annual Art Show was held at the Coatesville Cultural Society during the week of April 12th. Entitled “Coatesville Creative Connections”, the event included students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. Each art teacher selected twenty projects from their school for inclusion in the show. Canvas paintings, pop art sculptures, ceramic vessels, wood sculptures, drawings, as well as crafts such as weavings, jewelry, dolls, mobiles, painted gourds and silk banners were on display for the approximately 450 visitors in attendance over the two day event. The artists were on hand to interact with the visitors, some receiving offers to purchase their entries. Congratulations to the many artists and their art teachers for this outstanding venture.

Instrumental music students in grades five through twelve participated in the “Annual Prelude to Spring Concert” on April 17th in the 9/10 Center gymnasium. The program began with a rendition of the Star Spangled Banner performed by the Coatesville Area School District’s music teachers. Every grade level performed one or two selections from their concert repertoire with the culminating piece including all of the approximately three hundred musicians. Performed before a “packed house”, it was a wonderful evening of music. Thank you to the district music department for coordinating this program and congratulations to our student musicians.

On April 13th the Coatesville Area Senior High School B.R.I.D.G.E. E. Step Team participated in the 12th Annual Multicultural and Diversity Awareness Conference. Workshops included “What is your Purpose in Life”, “Who Defines You”, “Diversity and Recruitment in Law Enforcement”, and “Diversity Leadership in Your School and Community” to name a few. The final activity of the conference was a talent show in which Coatesville’s Step Team earned first place honors. Team members Christopher Hallager, Ronjae Jones, Keenan Smith, Nate Cooper, Tim Hallager and Anthony Barnett were directed by Mr. Roland Hines. Impersonating Michael Jackson through a dance routine, Ronjae Jones placed third. Mentors for the B.R.I.D.E.E. program include Mr. Hines, Mr. Darian Smith, Mr. Bryant Chavous, Mr. Carl Smith, Mr. Alim Kamara, Mr. Joe Milligan, Mr. Stephen Shirk, Mr. Ron Toole, and Dr. Eugenia Roberts. Congratulations to all who participated.

Mr. Robert Ross, Psychology teacher at the high school campus, has been chosen as the winner of the “Citadel Heart of Learning Award” for the Coatesville Area School District. In addition, Mr. Ross is a finalist for the “Citadel Heart of Learning Award” in Chester County. Congratulations to Mr. Ross for this honor. Also honored by the Citadel Heart of Learning program, North Brandywine Middle School earned first place in the “Schools with Heart” contest. Congratulations to Ms Taylor, principal and North Brandywine Middle School students and staff.

Jon Habermann was selected as the Daily Local News “Kid Reporter” earning the opportunity to attend a Philadelphia Wings lacrosse game. A seventh grade student at North Brandywine Middle School, Jon met with several Wings players after the April 7th game held at the Wells Fargo Center. Also included was a tour of the press box, educational workbook and the chance to observe the post-game press conference. Jon filed a report on the game in which the Wings defeated the Minnesota Swarm. The son of Gary and Deborah Habermann, Jon credits his Language Arts teacher, Mrs. Karen MacNamara with helping him develop an interest in language arts.

Nelson Negron, a freshman at the 9/10 center has been named the 2013 Youth Literacy Hero by the West Chester Public Library. The son of Carmen Nogurea, Nelson volunteered at Regency Park Apartments’ community center in the after school program. As a volunteer, Nelson performed many tasks that include serving snacks, helping individuals with homework, assisting in arts and craft projects, and organizing kickball games with the children in the program. In addition, he mentored a young boy who was behind in math and reading and who was beginning to display negative behaviors. The two read to each other and Nelson helped him to adopt a positive attitude. Upon his arrival from Puerto Rico, Nelson participated in the Regency program where he received help learning English and with his homework. Congratulations Nelson, we are very proud of your efforts as positive role model.

Michael Kelly, a sixth grade student at North Brandywine Middle School captured first place in the SIFMA Foundation’s InvestWrite student essay competition for middle school students. The essay competition is a culminating activity for the Stock Market Game which challenges students in grade four through twelve to analyze an investment scenario and write an essay offering investment advice. Students consider real-world economic events and trends, conduct research online, develop investment recommendations and, in the process, gain the skills to prepare for their own financial future. Michael is one of 20,000 students each year across the nation who undertake the InvestWrite challenge. Economics Pennsylvania, the sponsor of the competition in Pennsylvania and the SIFMA Foundation recognized Michael and his teacher, Mrs. Janene Groff, for his accomplishments. Michael is the son of Kevin and Beth Kelly. Congratulations Michael.

The registration for Advanced Placement Examinations for the 2013 school year has been completed and some all time numbers have been achieved for our district. The total number of tests ordered is 251; the total number of district students taking at least one exam is 41; the total number of students on Free or Reduced Lunch taking a test is 39. In addition, next year our AP course offerings increase to 16 with the addition of AP World History.

I think that I received a very good foundational education from Coatesville Area School District. This educational foundation gave me the essential tools and skill sets for achievement at advanced levels of education and professional experience. There are numerous teachers that I could site for influencing me during the fledgling stage of my education. The roots of the primary education that I received from Coatesville Area School District allowed me to flourish in College, Medical School, Internship, Residency, Chief Residency, Fellowship Training and Post-Fellowship Training and my ever-continuing education. I attribute this desire to excel educationally and professionally to the foundations that were built while growing up in Coatesville. I have ineffable gratitude for the investment in my life and educational foundation provided to me by the Coatesville Area School District.

Students attending Friendship Elementary School were visited by the Phillie Phanatic who performed scenes from the Phillie Phanatic’s Galopagos Island Adventure featured in the Phanatic Children’s book series. In addition, the Phanatic demonstrated his latest crowd pleasing dance moves. This visit was a result of the efforts of Ms Kimberly Stracinski’s third grade class in the “Be a Phantic About Reading” program. Well over 100,000 students in the region competed in this incentive with only the top performers earning a visit from the Phillies mascot. Initiated in 2004, “Be a Phanatic About Reading” encourages children in kindergarten through eighth grade to improve their literacy skills by reading a minimum of fifteen minutes each day.

The Pennsylvania Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired collaborated with students from Rainbow Elementary School on a fund raising effort to support the association’s programs. Students collected change and made donations in their homerooms throughout the month of February. In total, Rainbow Elementary students presented $702.55 to the Association for Association. Thank you to Mr. Maloney, students, teachers, and staff for participating in this endeavor.

Kings Highway Elementary School has benefitted from a book drive undertaken by members of Girl Scout Troop 4180. Many of the Girl Scouts attend Kings Highway and will reap the rewards of the troop’s efforts. The donated books will be distributed to enhance individual classroom libraries. Thank you to Troop 4180 for your donation.

The Chester County Community Dental Center in conjunction with the Chester County Health Department and the Coatesville Area School District are providing “Sealant Fridays” for students in our elementary and middle schools. A team of volunteer dentists and hygienists screen the children for cavities, apply dental sealant, and instruct the children to brush and floss their teeth correctly. Also provided during the visit are hands-on dental health education workshops that assist students with identifying cavities and gum disease. These workshops also provide valuable information regarding foods which are healthy for teeth, and demonstrate the consequences of poor dental health. Thank you to the Chester County Dental Center and Health Department for providing our students with this important service.

Madison Ollis, a fourth grade student at East Fallowfield Elementary School and daughter of Rodger and Michelle Ollis traveled to the White House today to meet with the President and First Lady. A participant in the “Soccer for Success Program”, a grant funded initiative, Madison is one of 25 students selected to travel to the White House and participate in a youth soccer clinic with the LA Galaxy, a professional soccer team. The program uses soccer to promote healthy lifestyles for children in under-resourced urban communities and provides them with free after school activities. Students play soccer for 90 minutes, three times a week. In addition to the health benefits, soccer is used to promote social change with resources ranging from structured activities to role models. Congratulations to Madison and her parents for this honor.

Forty- three students from the Coatesville Area School District participated in the Chester County Science Competition which was held on March 3rd and 4th at the Technical College High School, Pickering Campus. Our district had eleven students recognized for their efforts with six of those students earning the right to participate in the Delaware Valley Science Fair which will be held April 2nd through 4th at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, PA. Participants in the Delaware Valley Science Fair are competing for scholarships and prizes totaling more than 3 million dollars.

Also, congratulations to Coach Rick Nelms and the boys’ varsity basketball team for playing deep into the Pennsylvania State basketball tournament. The team lost in the quarter final round of play, but provided our community with much excitement.

This year our school district has hosted many additional athletic contests during the District One and Pennsylvania State tournaments in football and basketball. Many complements have been received lauding the Coatesvile Area School District for the excellent manner in which each contest was run. Visitors were also impressed by the friendliness of the workers and the cleanliness of the facilities. One gentleman who attended approximately 10 games here indicated that Coatesville providing an outstanding venue, the best he has encountered. Athletic Director, Jim Donato is responsible for ensuring that the events run smoothly and he has done an outstanding job. Thank you, Mr. Donato, for you efforts and for providing a well organized environment that reflects the Coatesville Area School District in yet another positive manner.

“Music in Our Schools Month” was celebrated with a performance by the district’s orchestra students on March 20th in the 9/10 Center auditorium. Thank you to Mr. Stoutamyer and his students for an excellent job.

Four students from the Coatesville Area School District participated in a hearing hosted by the Pennsylvania Senate Education Committee on Thursday, March 21st at the Downingtown S.T.E.M. Academy. Students from the Downingtown Area School District, Bishop Shanahan, and Collegium Charter School joined Coatesville seniors, Henok Abraham, Hunter Mountain, Lake Greene, and Taylor Chesnet to participate in the first ever hearing focused on students’ views and opinions on their schools and education in general. Questions focused on standardized testing, school security, and spending cuts. State Senator Mike Folmer, majority chair of the education committee and the minority chair, Senator Andrew Dinimiman organized the event to gather input from those most affected by legislative decisions in Harrisburg. Our students represented the district in an outstanding manner. Thank you to Henok, Hunter, Lake, and Taylor!

Plans are underway for “Camp Academia”, a program for middle school students taking place during their summer vacation. This endeavor will focus on enrichment in the areas of leadership, math, science, and language arts. The middle school principals in cooperation with Dr. Teresa Powell have been collaborating on this initiative.

Recently, the Coatesville Area School District family lost two of its long-time members. Ms Ann Herley taught in the district for over thirty years. Ann began her career at South Coatesville Elementary School and upon its closing moved to East Fallowfield Elementary until her retirement. During the Vietnam War she also taught in Darmstadt, Germany for five years. Ann was known for her dedication to her students, her school, and the district. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and the East Fallowfield school community.

Ms Angela Cristoforo, also affectionately known as “Ms Cris”, was a 1957 graduate of S. Horace Scott Senior High School, earning the honor of valedictorian and president of the senior class. She returned to Coatesville after college to teach Spanish at the high school completing her career in education as a guidance counselor at CASH. During her 41 year career in the district, Ms Cris was co-advisor for the yearbook, co-coordinator for graduation, and co-advisor to the Spanish Club. She received the CASH Outstanding Educator of the Year Award from the National Honor Society, which ultimately became the Angela M. Cristoforo Chapter of the National Honor Society. In addition, she was selected as Teacher of the Year by the Coatesville Area PTA. Ms Cris supported and encouraged all young people to become life-long learners and to become the best they could be. She proudly cheered the Red Raiders no matter the outcome. She generously gave of her time and her resources to help others. Ms Cris was a mentor to many young teachers as they entered her beloved profession. We shall not see one like her again! Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and the high school campus family.
