Reading List Goals

King's Highway School participates in the Chester County Reading Olympics that is scheduled annually in the Spring.     KH forms 2 teams: the Roaring Readers and the Royal Readers.  Team members from grades 4 and 5 read the Reading Olympics books, take notes about the book, and attend "booktogethers" in the library in preparation for the competition where teams earn ribbons based on the points earned for questions answered about the books.

At "Booktogethers", the KH team members in grades 4 and 5 share what they have read and practice answering questions.  Team members collaborate to read  the forty to fifty books on the Reading Olympics book list. Multi-copies of the Reading Olympics Books are on reserve in the Library for participating students to sign out.

In April, KH team members meet after school, eat dinner and ride to the county competition using district transportation.  The team competes with other schools to earn points for correctly answered questions about the books they read.  Based on the number of points earned, teams are awarded ribbons.

Goals of the Chester County Reading Olympics:
Sponsored by the Chester County Intermediate Unit, the goal of the Reading Olympics is to increase the quality and quantity of books students read for enjoyment.

Teams of students collaborate to read forty to fifty books that have been selected  by a CCIU organized committee of librarians, reading specialists and classroom teachers. These professionals read the books and write questions, which the teams answer during the competition.

The Olympics event is a celebration of reading rather than a contest.  All participants are awarded ribbons and receive a blue/neon green T-shirt with the team's name  on it.   Since the teams generate much excitement about this reading event, the experience is rewarding for everyone involved.
