RTI:  Response to Intervention

Response To Intervention is a method of academic intervention used to provide early assistance to children using testing data to implement effective teaching and learning strategies.  At King's Highway it is currently in Kindergarten and Grade 1.

Elementary Gifted Support Program

Mentally gifted students in the elementary grades are served by an itinerant gifted support teacher through a pull-out program within the child’s home school.  The academic program is built around themes with a focus on thinking skills using themes.  The program’s goal is to develop higher order thinking capabilities including analysis, synthesis and evaluation skills.  In addition to the pull–out program, mentally gifted students are served by regular education teachers who, through collaboration with the gifted support teachers, provide differentiation of instruction as needed.

Purpose

It is the fundamental purpose of the Coatesville Area School District to provide mentally gifted students with the opportunity to move beyond the routine acquisition of knowledge; to examine the relationships among different areas; or to delve deeply into a few areas.  The intent of our program is to challenge students to explore new areas of thinking and responding and to provide a sequence of experiences designed to promote continuous fulfillment of the potential of the gifted student.

Definition

The Pennsylvania Department of Education has defined the term mentally gifted to include “a person who has an IQ of 130 or higher and when multiple criteria as set forth in Department Guidelines indicate gifted ability. Determination of gifted ability will not be based on IQ score alone. A person with an IQ score lower than 130 may be admitted to gifted programs when other educational criteria in the profile of the person strongly indicate gifted ability. Determination of mentally gifted shall include an assessment by a certified school psychologist.”

Identification Process

The Coatesville Area School District employs a comprehensive assessment process in our continuing effort to identify mentally gifted students. The multiple criteria that the Coatesville Area School district uses to identify mentally gifted students consists of the following: :

· Parent and teacher ratings of student behaviors

· Review of student academic records

· Ability and achievement assessments

. IQ Score

Core Extension
Core extension is a block of time that each grade level devotes to increase instruction in the areas of Language Arts and Mathematics.  This time focuses on skills that students are weak in as determined by the district testing.  Core Extension lasts for approximately 30 minutes each day and involves every one of our students.  The purpose of Core Extension is to raise the achievement thresholds that schools need to obtain the Adequate Yearly Progress ( AYP ) required by the state and measured through yearly tests such as the Pennsylvania System of Schools Assessment) (PSSA).

If you have any question about your child's involvement with Core Extension, please contact MR. Lefever, by calling the school office at 610-383-3775, or email, lefevers@coatesville.k12.pa.us
