Middle School Gifted Grading Rubric

Gifted students at South Brandywine Middle School are assigned four classes for each six-day cycle and are evaluated according to the Gifted Grading Rubric.  Class size generally ranges from five to ten students, but may be larger or smaller depending upon a variety of scheduling requirements.

Included in the program are activities that introduce and reinforce all levels of thinking in both the cognitive and affective domains as well as developing individual learning styles, self-esteem, and skills in independent study and research.  Units of study may include, but are not limited to: Bridge Building; Debate and Public Speaking (optional entry in the Forensic Competition sponsored by the CCIU at Immaculata University); Directed Writing/Short Story Unit; District and Regional Knowledge Bowl Competitions; Knowledge Master Open National Competitions; K’Nex Roller Coaster Physics; Marketing Unit; Stock Market Game (sponsored by Villanova University); Technology; and the Thinking Cap QuizBowl.

In addition to the variety of activities offered in the gifted classroom, students may also report to the Gifted room during advisory and lunch (depending upon teacher availability) to pursue areas of particular interest or for additional instructional time with the teacher.  At various times throughout the year, the teacher may co-teach an activity and/or lesson in the gifted/talented regular education classroom.  Examples of such activities may include, but would not be limited to courtroom and public speaking simulations.

Finally, students are given the opportunity to explore local areas of interest through a series of educational field trips that may include but is not limited to Harrisburg, Philadelphia, Strasburg, and West Chester.
