Here at Scott Middle School, we work in a partnership with both West Chester University and the Coatesville Youth Initiative through the development of a school-based health council. Our school health council was formed to include the Principal, Assistant Principal, teachers across various grades and subject areas, the school nurse, and students. Together we crafted an action plan, giving us a timeline of events for the year focusing on the PA Standards for Interpersonal Skills, thereby concentrating our efforts on the health risk behavior of bullying and intimidation. To date we have explored many strategies addressing bullying and confrontation in our school. First, we had a Tie Dye Day to show awareness and support for the cause and to raise money for a culminating activity planned for May. We’ve developed classroom lessons on bullying and conflict resolution designed to be co-taught with our guidance counselors. The entire school watched a play performed by the Walnut Street Theater called Only 13, focusing on the various types of bullying existing today and the realities of the emotions felt by those involved. Our students are about to take part in a national essay contest, where the students will express why they think it’s important for youth around the globe to understand and embrace that are good enough. Lastly, we held a student poster contest on the topic of anti-bullying. In the picture above are our three finalists: Lindsay Brown, Madison Short, and Maya Butcher. |

This year we had a relatively mild winter and it is hard to believe that spring is around the corner. March 10th daylight savings time will begin once more. Don’t forget to turn your clock ahead one hour! Here are some of the activities that are happening this month at Scott Middle School. March 1st and 2nd our drama club will be presenting “The Little Mermaid”.
